Jamie Oliver The Naked Chef And His Food Revolution

Organic food more affordable

The Food Revolution

I followed the first Food Revolution series, based in Huntington, West Virginia, and also the second season, set in Los Angeles, California.

If you’re not familiar with Jamie Oliver or Food Revolution, here’s a quick intro. Jamie Oliver is a talented young British chef who burst onto the UK food scene years ago with his show and book The Naked Chef. His mission has always been simple — to make healthy, family-friendly food that’s easy to prepare and genuinely delicious.

But Jamie is more than a chef — he’s become a passionate food activist. In the UK, he helped reform public school meal programs, proving that nutritious, affordable food could be served to every child.

Now, he’s brought his Food Revolution model to the United States.

From Huntington, WV to Los Angeles, CA

Jamie began his U.S. journey in Huntington, West Virginia — at the time, labeled by the CDC as the “heaviest city in America.” His goal: to help improve school meals and inspire healthier eating habits for kids and families.

In the second season, he tackled Los Angeles, home to the second-largest school district in the country, feeding 650,000 students daily. Half of these children rely on free school meals. Yet, within miles of the Hollywood sign, some communities have almost no access to fresh produce. In one area where Jamie worked, childhood obesity rates reached 80%.

As Jamie wrote:

“After last year’s experience of trying to change food culture in the beautiful town of Huntington, West Virginia, I expected the challenges in L.A. to be very different. Shockingly, they were all too familiar.

Locked Out of the Kitchen

Despite his proven success, Jamie was initially shut out of the L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD) food program. Even after multiple polite requests, he was met with resistance — including a particularly dismissive encounter with the then-Superintendent of Schools, who publicly brushed him off at a meeting. When Jamie tried again, he was told to submit his request in writing.

So, he decided to take another route — directly connecting with parents and the community.

What’s Really on the Menu?

Jamie invited parents to bring examples of their children’s school lunches to his Food Revolution kitchen. What showed up was shocking: processed foods sealed in plastic “socks,” reheated and served daily — pizza, fries, waffles, flavored milk, and other mystery items that looked more like airplane meals than school lunches.

Jamie called it “airplane food.” Honestly, I’ve flown on plenty of airlines, and this looked worse. I wouldn’t want to eat that every day — let alone try to learn and grow on it.

Even more disturbing, the show revealed that LAUSD meals could contain up to 15% of what’s known as “pink slime” — a filler made from processed beef trimmings treated with ammonia. And then there’s the sugar: over 57 tons of sugar per week added to flavored milk alone!

To show the impact, Jamie filled an entire school bus with the amount of sugar served to L.A. students in one week. The pile overflowed into the parking lot — a powerful visual that left everyone stunned.

For context: a single serving of flavored milk in many U.S. schools contains 28 grams of sugar — more than a can of soda.

A Personal Note

I count myself among the lucky ones. My mum packed my lunch fresh every day — complete with fruit from our garden, homemade snacks, and even her famous lemonade. One of my American friends used to call my mum’s lunches “legendary.”

At the time, I didn’t realize how fortunate I was. Looking back, I see how those wholesome meals helped me focus, learn, and grow — not just physically, but mentally too. What a gift that was.

So What Can We Do?

If you’re concerned about what’s being served in schools, there are ways to help.

  • Watch the series. It’s eye-opening — and if you feel it’s appropriate, let your kids watch too. The look on their faces when they learn what’s really in their food says it all.

Even my seven-year-old daughter son Nic has sworn off burgers containing pink slime. (I buy ground beef that doesn’t contain it.) He was so serious that he turned down his usual burger at Freddy’s this week.

A little knowledge really does go a long way. Both of my kids take packed lunches now — and while I don’t know if they’re as “legendary” as my mum’s, I’m giving it my best shot.

  1. This is author and columnist, David Lawrence Dewey.  I have been writing about the dangers of hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, excess sugar in processed food and other toxins in the food supply since 1996.

I was the first journalist to warn consumers about hydrogenated oils and aspartame in 1996.

I have written an extensive article about this fiasco with the LAUSD school district and I show by actual school menu items, what is in them and how deadly they are. This has been kept from students, parents for too long.  You can read it on my website at:

If you are a student, I asked you to please read this article and the links to my other articles on the deadly toxins in processed food andhow children as young as ten are developing diabetes, heart disease, learning problems because of poor diet.  Tell your friends about this article and if you have one of these diseases I would like to hear from you.  You can contact me through my website.

Jaime Oliver is trying to save lives, just as I have since 1996, let him in the schools!

    • David thank you so much for commenting (coincidence that we share the same middle name?!). I will post your links in a blog post too, well worth sharing and thank you for taking the time to read this. Together, all of us can do more!

      Cheers
