Using Affirmations For Daily Motivation and Clarity

Using affirmations work because they are a language which is positively framed.

Our brains have to process the words that we speak and the language we use in order to understand what we are saying to ourselves or others. You may have heard of 'negative self-speak', which is often installed or added to your mind by others when you are growing up.

As our brains actively process the same words or phrases over, and over, we are helping to create new neural pathways and more positive experiences.

Do you know how to begin using affirmations? Here are some simple hints and tips.

Using Affirmations – How to Go About It

Using affirmations

Simple ways to make affirmations part of your daily rhythm:

  • Write them down on yellow sticky notes and place them where you’ll see them often—on your bathroom mirror, inside your wallet, or in your purse.
  • Try a phone app designed for affirmations.
  • Follow the 3 x 3 Rule.

When I use affirmations, I like to repeat each one at least three times—three times a day, or more if needed. You can say them aloud, or silently in your mind if that’s more comfortable.

Why Using Affirmations Can Help On The Spiritual Journey

Affirmations work because they use positively framed language—and the words we choose shape the way our brains and bodies respond.

Our minds process every word we speak, whether to ourselves or others. In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP™), this is called internal dialogue.

You might have heard of negative self-talk, the unhelpful messages often picked up from others as you were growing up. (No judgment, it’s just part of being human.)

Repeated Phrases Create Neural Pathways (Brain Habits)

When we repeat the same phrases over and over, our brains create neural pathways, patterns that link words to experiences, emotions, and responses. These associations can be positive or negative.

So, when we use affirmations—whether uplifting or discouraging ones—we’re triggering emotional and physiological reactions connected to those words. So, saying an affirmation, aloud or silently, reactivates the feeling-state it represents, releasing corresponding brain chemicals and body responses.

This is why consistent use of affirmations can help reprogram your brain, strengthening positive pathways and supporting healthier emotional chemistry.

A Few of My Favorite Affirmations

1. “I approve of myself.”

This one, from Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life, is a classic for a reason. It might feel awkward or overly simple at first, especially if affirmations are new to you. But if you’re in a tough place, this is the one to repeat—often and with feeling. As Louise used to say, even 500 times a day if needed!

2. “Every time I turn my back, a check comes in the mail.”

I first heard this from Martha Beck on Oprah Winfrey’s Life Class. It’s a lighthearted and powerful affirmation for activating abundance and aligning with the Law of Attraction. I often say it out loud when I walk to my mailbox—it always makes me smile.

3. Fill-in-the-blank affirmation:

“As I move further along my spiritual journey, I become more and more ____________.”

“My intuition flows naturally, and I step into my soul-fulfilled purpose of ________________.”

If you’re not clear on your purpose yet, you can simply stop at the word “purpose.” The key is to feel the truth of what you’re saying, even if it’s still unfolding.

In Summary

Affirmations are simple yet powerful tools for reshaping the way you think, feel, and experience life.

When used consistently and consciously, they help you align your inner dialogue with your deeper truth. They can become part of how you create a foundation of self-approval, abundance, and clarity, and release old programming.

Whether spoken aloud or internally, affirmations invite your mind and spirit to work together in harmony, turning intention into embodied reality.
