Thieves® Essential Oil and Thieves products® – some easy applications

by Sarah Lawrence Hinson on April 30, 2011

What is Thieves® from Young Living and how can I use it?

Thieves®Thieves Essential Oil blend is a combination of therapeutic grade cloves, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary.  Thieves® was created based on research about four thieves in France who covered themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims, hence the name.

Some applications in my home and with my family – from kids’ braces to cold and flu prevention

I use Thieves® for

  • dabbing on my neck and wrists when either myself, or a family member is getting sick with a cold or the flu…quite often it prevents me from becoming sick.  I also do this when we go on travel on airplanes, for example, the whole family dabs it on.
  • If you have a diffuser, you can also diffuse Thieves® (and I add Lavender too) in the house near the sick person, it really accelerates healing in my experience.
  • Callie has braces and recently got some kind of canker sore (ulcer) on the inside of her lip.  Dabbed Thieves on twice and it went!  I also use Thieves with a little kids paintbrush and have painted it around her gums at the front since she recently had a Power Chain added, poor kid.  (Closing up the 4 front teeth fairly quickly).  This meant more contraptions in the front of her mouth so more chance of bacteria settling, the Thieves® clears that up.  She also uses the Thieves® toothpaste and mouthwash at night.

Using the Thieves® Cleaner at home – did you know that chemicals in cleaners can really make people sick

Thieves®It’s heartening to see so many great new cleaning products out there now.  I have used Thieves® cleaner for over 5 years now, and recently purchased a Norwex product to clear one other cleaner out of my house that I hadn’t found an alternative for (until now – one thing at time!).

The Thieves® cleaner lasts a long while, you simply get yourself a spray bottle, fill with water and put the prescribed amount in the bottle, shake up and use.

My recommended uses (so far! of Thieves® Cleaner)

  • Cleaning all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.  The only place it hasn’t worked well is a worn bathtub (plastic molded type).  I’ve been using a bleach-based cleaner in there but don’t like it because it makes me cough and I have to leave the room.  So I’ve ordered some Norwex cleaning paste and will report on that in another article about Norwex, a company I’ve heard a lot about and yesterday went to a presentation on their products.  Once my order comes in the mail I’ll let you know how it is!  Any Norwex users out there?  Feel free to comment!  All comments are moderated, which means I look at them before they’re published, so expect a short delay before you see your comment come up.
  • I’ve used Thieves® Cleaner neat on stubborn clothes stains.  Has worked for me with grease stains, put enough cleaner on to cover the stain, leave for 20 minutes or so, then launder as normal.
  • My iron skillet.  Sometimes I just can’t get all the grease off with hot water and scrubbing.  A little squirt of Thieves® does the trick, then rinse again thoroughly.
  • Have a friend who bought the Thieves® kit from me, she had permanent marker on a sofa, used the concentrated Thieves® cleaner, and off it came!  Then re-oil as normal.
  • My oldest daughter had one really bad stomach bug this year.  I used Thieves® to clean everything up and Peppermint under my nose while I was cleaning to avoid the gag reflex.  Also dropped Peppermint in her ‘sick’ bowl which made it a nicer experience (well, as good as that gets!).  Also I do turn my head away and hold my breath when helping a sick child like that.  I’ve noticed I’m far less likely to catch whatever it is, since these things can be airborne.

This from The Huffington post this week, full article here YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS

BETHANY BUCHANAN owns an eco-conscious nursing home, Grace Homes, in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Buchanan, a registered nurse, has been a healthcare professional for 16 years, including eight years in hospitals.  I use Young Living Essential Oils’ Thieves Household Cleaner in my care home. I love its warm cinnamon-and-clove scent — my home never has the bleachy disinfectant smell other facilities have. I also appreciate that it’s highly concentrated, so it comes in a smaller bottle that’s also recyclable. Some studies I’ve read show that it kills more than 99% of bacteria and viruses, so I feel confident in it from an infection-control standpoint. It cuts the daily grease and grime effectively and leaves behind a pretty shine on wood surfaces. It contains 100% plant and mineral ingredients, so I don’t worry about my staff’s lungs being harmed from inhaling fumes.

Thieves® Foaming Hand Soap – my first year without dry hands in the winter

Thieves®Last but not least, Thieves® soap.  This is actually the first year I’ve used Thieves® hand soap in all bathrooms and in the kitchen.  I really like the smell and the effectiveness of this soap.  No chemicals, no fillers.  Having some great results!

  • This is the first year I’ve avoided having dry cracked knuckles throughout the winter.  I believe the soap has something to do with that.  I have always moisturized, but until this year it didn’t make a difference.
  • Both girls have had the least illness to date since they were born.  This may be an age thing also (ages 9 and 7), but I believe my insistence on using the soap has had an effect.
  • I also gave the 1st-3rd grade teachers at the girls’ school a Thieves pack of soap and oils as a Christmas gift!  They all really enjoyed the products and I’m hoping that it helped everyone at school stay well throughout the ‘flu’ season.

Thieves® soap now comes in a refill!

I ordered the Thieves® soap refill this month, a great way to make all these resources go further and save on recycling.  If you want to know more about the oils, check out my Using Essential Oils page or the Young Living website.
